Origins of SLO Chai
While trekking in the Himalayan foothills of India, Joel enjoyed many cups of sweet, spicy chai. Back in California we were unable to find a chai that was so bold and fresh, or one made with Fair Trade and Organic ingredients. As a teacher and a birth nurse, we wondered … could we create a green business to promote health, well-being and sustainability? This vision led us to San Luis Obispo County where we set out to perfect a chai recipe emulating the tastes of an authentic North Indian variety. After months brewing batch after batch, in October 2004, SLO Chai came to life!
Now after three successful years of selling at farmers' markets, grocery stores, and cafes, SLO Chai has a solid reputation for its outstanding tea products. Our varieties include the Vanilla Spice Latte, 5 flavors of teabags, loose leaf teas, and the one-and-only Chai Cream Ale – each one carefully crafted with the highest quality ingredients. Certified Organic and Fair Trade!
From the beginning, we've paid close attention to the ecological and social impacts of our company. In 2007, SLO Chai gave its first Sustainable Educator Grant to ECOSLO’s Garden Project. We commit 1% of profits toward sustainability education. Our hope is that this model of green business is one you can believe in and be proud to support.
So whether you are heading to work or to play, at home or the café, a cup of SLO Chai can relax, rejuvenate, and detoxify. Please continue to share SLO Chai with family and friends and make it a part of your daily ritual. Find out what's going on with SLO Chai in the future by signing up for our newsletter today!
